The Obalon technique is performed within the context of a multidisciplinary team made up of an endocrinologist and a dietitian to monitor it correctly.
Placing the balloon requires the patient to swallow a soluble capsule containing a balloon that swells in the stomach. This procedure takes approximately 15 minutes.
During a visit with the doctor, the patient should drink a glass of water and swallow a capsule containing the folded balloon. The capsule has a thin tube that allows the doctor to inflate the balloon. Once the capsule reaches the stomach it dissolves and releases the balloon.
The doctor confirms the location through an x-ray and subsequently a device is used to inflate the balloon with a special gas. After inflating the ball, the doctor releases the tube from the balloon and gently withdraws it through the mouth to leave the balloon floating freely in the stomach. From this moment the patient can return to his habitual activity.
At the end of the 12-week treatment period, the balloon is removed with a brief endoscopic procedure. An endoscopy will be scheduled and under sedation, the balloon will be withdrawn. The total procedure is 30 minutes.
Treatment of the balloon can be reversed at any time if the doctor or the patient so desires.
